Mindful Eating During Holidays

What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness teaches us to pay attention on purpose and be aware

of our feelings. With mindfulness, we can manage emotions without resorting to reactive

or addictive behaviors.

Practice Self Compassion:

  • Be kind to yourself.

  • Enjoy holiday treats without guilt.

  • Occasional indulgence is natural and part of life.

Mindful Planning:

  • Plan your meals mindfully.

  • Eat balanced, healthy meals earlier in the day if you have a holiday event in the evening.

  • Avoid arriving at parties overly hungry.

Savor Holiday Flavors:

  • Embrace unique flavors and food traditions with family and friends.

  • Honor both stomach and heart hunger.

  • Pay attention to taste, texture, aroma, appearance, and temperature of food.

  • Ask yourself, "What sounds good?"

Be Mindful of Social Distractions:

  • Research shows we overindulge when others do.

  • Alternate alcoholic drinks with water.

  • Avoid staying close to the food table during gatherings.

  • Put your fork down while conversing during meals.

  • Engage in non-food-focused activities like hiking or caroling with friends and family.

Express Gratitude:

  • Before meals, express gratitude for the food and company.

  • Cultivate a sense of appreciation for the dining experience
